yet, CHRIST is "set forth, to be a propitiation, only THROUGH FAITH in His Blood."-Rom. v. 18.-Rev. xxii. 17.-Is. lv. 1.-Rom. iii. 25.

32. Q. What do you understand by that?

A. That, unless a man have a lively faith in the death of CHRIST, that death will be of no avail to him. For it is only by believing with the heart, that, each man, for himself, becomes partaker of the benefit of the sufferings and death of CHRIST. If he do not believe it, it is to him as if CHRIST had neither suffered nor died. Therefore does Scripture say, that “we ARE SAVED THROUGH FAITH."-Eph. ii. 8.

33. Q. Explain it more fully;

A. "Faith is the evidence of things not seen;" for, what we believe firmly, is, as it were, present to our mind. So that he who has a lively faith in CHRIST, has Him always present to his mind, and in his heart, dying for his sins.

34. Q. How is that faith said to "save" us?

[ocr errors]

A. Because, through that lively and constant faith, the sincere Christian is crucified with CHRIST; and the 'life which he lives in the flesh, he lives by the faith of the SON OF GOD, who loved him, and gave Himself for him."-Heb. xi. 1.-Gal, ii. 20.

35. Q. What is the calling of those, who have a lively faith in the Son of GOD, crucified?

A. The Holy Apostle says, that "they that are CHRIST'S, have crucified the flesh, with the affections and lusts;" "knowing this, that our old man is crucified with Him, that the body of sin might be destroyed. that henceforth we should not serve sin."-Gal. v. 24. -Rom. vi. 6.—-xiii. 14.-1 Pet. ii. 11.

36. Q. What is the "old man ?"

A. Our sinful nature, which we receive from Adam. 37. Q. How does the Church remind her children of their calling, as servants of her crucified SAVIOUR?

A. At Baptism; when she signs them with the sign of the Cross, and teaches them to "renounce the devil and all his works, the pomps and vanities of this wicked world, and all the sinful lusts of the flesh; so as not to follow, nor be led by them,'

38. Q. What is that life of the Christian, called in Scripture ?

[ocr errors]

A. To be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God, through JESUS CHRIST OUR LORD."-Rom. vi. 11. 39. Q. What is to be " dead unto sin ?”

A. "To live no longer therein;" that is to say, to take no more pleasure in sin.-Rom. xi. 11.

40. Q. Why is a faithful Christian said to be "dead unto sin."?

A. Because the faithful Christian is united to CHRIST by faith; and as He believes that CHRIST died on the Cross, on which He was crucified, and that He "died for our sins;" he can no longer take any pleasure in the sins for which HIS SAVIOUR died.-1 John iii. 6. Rom. vi.

41. Q. How did CHRIST DIE for our sins?

A. Holy Scripture teaches that "death came by sin, ,"" for the wages of sin is death ;" and that, "death passed upon all men, for that all men have sinned." So

CHRIST died "in the flesh," as one of us die; because, He verily had our flesh, and because He bore our sins, in His body, on the Cross. He DIED, because our sins were

in very deed, laid upon Him.-Rom. v. 12.23.-1Pet. iii. 18.-Is. liii.-Rom. v. 6. viii. 34.-1 Cor. xv. 3. 1 Thess. v. 10.

42. Q. Why must CHRIST have died?

A. In order " that He should taste of death for every man," and "that, through death, He might destroy him, that hath the power of death, that is, the Devil."-Heb, ü. 9. 14.

43. Q. Explain your meaning;

A. CHRIST DIED; and HE WAS BURIED, because He was DEAD. He was, at that time, bearing the sins of His Body, the Church. But when He rose from the dead, He showed that He was stronger than death and the grave; and that death could have no power over Him. Thus, He has "abolished death.” 44. Q. But if our LORD CHRIST, had not died, should we feel certain that He has abolished death?

A. No. If CHRIST had not really died, He would not have shown that even DEATH is subject unto Him; for that He has fought and overcome him.-Rom. vi. 9.-2. Tim. i. 10.-Rom. ii. 22.

45. Q. What unspeakable gift has the death of CHRIST obtained to us?

A. REMISSION OF SINS. The death of CHRIST is, and was, the sure and certain pledge that, in very deed, He bore our sins in His body; and that He suffered all their curse, instead of us: so that God will no more remember those sins against us, But now God has released us from them, because CHRIST, by HIS DEATH, has entirely and for ever, satisfied God for us.-St. Matt. xxvi. 28.-St. Luke i. 27.-Acts x. 43.-Heb. x. 18.

46. Q.

What follows, from our being released from the punishment of our sins, by the death of CHRIST?

A. It follows that God is now, entirely and for ever, RECONCILED TO US; "for if when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more being reconciled, we shall be saved by His life." -Rom. v. 10.

47. Q.

Did God see any thing in us, which could lead Him to send His Son, to suffer and to die, for our sins?

A.

[ocr errors]

Nothing whatever; "for men lay dead in their trespasses and sins." But herein is love, not that we loved God, but that HE LOVED US. For, He who is rich in mercy, commendeth His love towards us, in that, while we were yet sinners, CHRIST died for us." "For, BY GRACE we are saved."-1. John iv. 10.-Rom. v. 6. 8.-Eph. 5.

grace?"

A grace" is, a gift, which we do not deserve.
How, then, are we saved by grace?"

Because, WE HAVE DONE NOTHING, to deserve, that God should deliver up His Son for us, and save us from our sins; and that The SoN should humble Himself and become obedient even unto death, to suffer willingly in our stead. Therefore it is entirely" BY GRACE, that we are saved, through faith; and that not of ourselves; it is THE Gift of God."-Eph. ii. 8.

"Thanks be unto HIM ALONE, throughout all ages, for His unspeakable gift."- 2 Cor. ix. 15.

ARTICLE V.

"HE DESCENDED INTO HELL, THE THIRD DAY

HE ROSE AGAIN FROM THE DEAD:"

1. Q. Repeat the fifth Article of your faith?

A. CHRIST "descended into hell; the third day He rose again from the dead."

2. Q. What do you thereby profess to believe ?

A. That CHRIST being dead and buried, "by His death, destroyed him that had the power of death, that is the Devil;" and then rose again from the dead. Heb, ii. 14.

3. Q. Why must CHRIST have destroyed the Devil?”

A. Because, if CHRIST had not overcome his greatest enemy, the Devil, "who had the power of death," His CHURCH would not have been, for ever, safe. But now, CHRIST having overcome the Devil, Death and Hell have no more power over those for whom He died.-St. Matt. xvi. 18.-Heb. ii. 15. ix. 12.1 Cor. xv. 54, 55.-Col. ii. 15.

4. Q. For what other reason must CHRIST have overcome the Devil?

A. In order to give, to those for whom He died, power to overcome the Devil, when they are tempted of
