In six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day."-Ps. xxxiii. 6. 9.-Ex. xx. 11. -Ps. cxxxix. 14.-Gen. i. 1. 6. 7. ii. 2.-Jer. xxxii. 17.-Heb. xi. 3.-2 Pet. iii, 5.-Ps. xl. 5.-Is.xxv.7. 53. Q. So far you have shown me why GoD is called The FATHER;" what more does Scripture teach us?

A. It teaches us to call GoD "OUR FATHER." 54. Q. How can we, poor sinners, have a right to call the Most High GOD, "OUR FATHER?"

[ocr errors]

A. Because we are made" children of GoD by faith in CHRIST JESUs," His only Son. For as many as received Him, to them gave He power to become the Sons of God, even to them that believe on His name." -Gal. iii. 26.-Rom. ix. 5.-St. John ii. 12. ix. 30.

55. Q. But if JESUS CHRIST be the "only Son of God," how are we also called the " sons of GOD.?"

A. JESUS CHRIST alone, is the Son of God from everlasting, being ONE with His FATHER, GOD BLESSED FOREVER; but we are made children of GOD by adoption, through Him.

56. Q. What do you mean by "adoption ?"

A. To" adopt a child" means, to take another person's child to be one's own, out of love for the child. We were ofour nature" children of wrath ;" but "GOD who is rich in mercy, for His great love wherewith He loved us, even when we were dead in sins," "hath given us the adoption of children by JESUS CHRIST, unto Himself, according to the good pleasure of His will."-Eph : ii. 3. 4. 5. i. 5.

57. Q. What great blessings do we receive by being adopted as CoD's children?

A. We receive a right to all His promises made to us in CHRIST; for if we be "children, then heirs of God; and joint-heir with CHRIST, to the kingdom of His Father and ourFather."-Rom. viii. 17.-Gal. iii. 29. -Tit. iii. 7.

58. Q. Who has obtained to us such great and precious promises of GOD?

A. JESUS CHRIST the Son of GoD, has obtained them to us by His Cross and precious Blood. 59. Q. How does God adopt us as His children?

A. By Baptism. It is the seal of GODS' covenant with us, that He for His part will be OUR FATHEK. 60. Q. What is our part in that covenant?

A. "That we should do His will and keep His commandments, and walk in the same all the days of our life." We therefore have a right to call GOD FATHER;" for we are His children by adoption, through JESUS CHRIST.
