See, also, a life in Fox's Martyrs. There is an old one by Dr. Thomas James, entitled An Apology for John Wickliffe. Oxford, 1608. 4to. Another by John Lewis (the historian of the translations of the Bible). Oxford, 1820, 8vo, with additions.

Barnum, H. L.: The Spy Unmasked; or, Memoirs of Enoch Crosby, alias Harvey Birch. New-York, 1828. 8vo.

This has no sign of anything like authenticity about it. It is an attempt to fix the identity of a character in a novel (Cooper's Spy) with a person known only in very vague local tradition.

Benger, Miss: Memoirs of the Life of Anne Boleyn, Queen of Hen-

with an Historical and Critical Account of his Writings. Edinburgh, 1810. 2 vols. 4to. To Charles Knight's edition of Fairfax's translation of the Jerusalem Delivered (Windsor, 1817, small 8vo) he prefixed Lives of Tasso and Fairfax. A life is also prefixed to Wiffen's translation of the same poem. The discovery, in 1836, of the secret correspondence between Tasso and the Princess Leonora of Este has thrown a new and very noble light upon his long-supposed insanity. It proves that he was loved in return; and renders his feigned madness and his total silence a rare instance of romantic gallantry and fidelity. Blair, Adam: Some Passages in his Life. Boston, 1822. 12mo. Boaden, James Life of Mrs. Siddons; interspersed with Anecdotes of Authors and Actors. Philadelphia, 1827. 8vo. : Memoirs of the same, by Thomas Campbell. Bombet, L. A. on Metastasio, and on the Present State of Music in France and Italy. Translated from the French. Providence, 1820.

12mo.

This is much esteemed as a piece of musical biography, and the only English work on Haydn or Mozart. Of Metastasio Hoole published a partial translation (18 plays). London, 1800. 3 vols. 8vo. Beloe printed (privately) in 1823 a translation of his Canzonettes. See FINE ARTS, MUSIC.

Boswell, James Life of Dr. Samuel Johnson; with Notes of Malone. Bellows Falls, Vermont, 1824. 5 vols. 12mo.

The same, including a Journey to the Hebrides, by the same; with Additions and Notes, by J. Wilson Croker. Boston, 1822. 2 vols. 8vo.

These memoirs present, on the whole, the best literary and critical history of the time to which they relate. Croker's edition imbodies the notices from Mrs. Piozzi's, Hawkins's, and the other lives of Johnson.

Bowen, Henry L.: Memoirs of Tristram Burgess; with Selections from his Speeches and occasional Writings. Providence, 1835. 8vo.

Bower, Alexander: Life of Martin Luther; embracing an Account of the earlier Progress of the Reformation. Philadelphia, 1824. 8vo.

Besides many Latin lives, there are other English ones, as that of Brerely (Saint Omers, 1624, 4to), and that of Thomas Haynes. London, 1648, 4to. The latter is esteemed. The Table-talk of Luther (his Tisch-reden) has also been Englished, under the title of "Colloquia Mensalia, or Divine Discourse at his table, translated by Captain Henrie Bell." London, 1652, folio. For the singular history of this book, see a notice in the Retrospective Review, vol. V., p. 283. There is a good criticism of his works in the same journal, vol. X., p. 180. To a London edition of thirty-four of his sermons (1815, 8vo) a translation is attached of Melancthon's life of him. See, in Ecclesiastical History, Scott. Bray, William Memoirs of John Evelyn, comprising his Diary from 1641 to 1705, 6, and a Selection of his Familiar Letters. To which is subjoined, the Private Correspondence between King Charles I. and Sir Edward Nichols also between Hyde (Lord Clarendon) and Sir Richard Browne, Ambassador to the Court of France in the time of Charles and the Usurpation. From the original MSS. London, 1827. 5 vols. 8vo. The diary contains, in the earlier part, a journal of his travels on the Continent-chiefly in Italy.

Brewster, Sir David: Life of Sir Isaac Newton. (Family Library.) New-York, 1831. 18mo.

There is another popular biography in the Library of Useful Knowledge; also, a life, by Fontenelle, translated. London, 1728. 8vo a memoir from original MSS. in the possession of the Earl of Portsmouth, by Edmund Turnor, in his History of Grantham. London, 1806. 4to. The lately published Memoirs of Flamstead disclose some particulars of his private conduct, which are less advantageous to him than one would have wished.
