CHAPTER LX.

MODERN GEOGRAPHY. Mogul Empire.

Blok: History of Celebes. See it in Geography.

Dow, Alexander: History of Hindostan, from the Earliest Times to the Settlement of the Empire under Aurungzebe. Translated from the Persian. Dublin, 1792. 3 vols. 8vo.

This is said, by Lowndes, "to be, without acknowledgment, made up chiefly from Bernier's Travels." This appears a very inconsiderate charge against an esteemed book, when it is remembered that Bernier's Travels do not contain a history of Hindostan, except so far as he relates the transactions of his twelve years' residence at the court of Aurungzebe. How, then, out of these twelve years in Bernier, was Dow to build his book "chiefly ?" A little confusion of the memory, probably, had some place in this accusation; for Bernier wrote also a "History of the last Revolution in the States of the Mogul;" and though this is, of course, confined to a single main event, yet Dow has, no doubt, made some use of it, as of sound, authentic material; and hence the imputation of plagiarism against his whole history.

MODERN HISTORY. China and Japan.

Gutzlaff, Charles: A Sketch of Chinese History, Ancient and Modern. From the Swedish. New-York, 1834. 2 vols. 12mo. For China, Du Halde must be again referred to as the great source of information. Also, D'Anville's Mémoires sur la Chine; and the collection of the reports of the Jesuit Missionaries, entitled Mémoires concernant les Chinois, par les Missionaires, Paris, 1776, 16 vols. in 4to; together with the Selection of Lettres édifiantes et curieuses; with Ribadeneira's Historia de las Islas del Archipelago y Reynos de China, Tartaria, &c., and Navarete's Tratados Historicos de la Monarchia de China: also, the Histoire de la Conquête de la Chine par les Tartares Manchoux, par Vojeux de Brunem, le Pére Jouve. We may here refer also to the Description of the Island of Formosa, published by Psalmanazar, and remarkable as forming a part of that villanous imposture with which he began a literary career that afterward became as virtuous as it was successful. It is the more necessary to mention his forgery, because the exact and skilful Brunet has placed it, without note, among books of authority: a mere oversight, however; for Brunet is rarely ignorant of anything he should know.
