Cox's Travels in Switzerland has a historic sketch. See Travels. There is a Latin collection, Scriptores Historia Helvetica, qui Latino Sermone scripserunt clarissimi; and two good histories-that of Müller, in either German or French; and that of Mallet, in French. Planta's History of the Helvetic Confederacy, and d'Ivernois Tableau des Révolutions de Genève are little valued.

The life of Frederic is yet further illustrated in the following books: his own "Memoirs of the House of Brandenbourg," found in the second volume of the collection of his "Euvres Posthumes;" his History of his own Times, in Holcroft's

translation of his posthumous works; Samuel Puffendorf's "De Rebus gestis Friderici magni ;" Lavaux's "Vie de Frédéric II., Roi de Prusse. Strasburg, 1788. 7 vols. 8vo. And Count Philip de Segur's "Histoire des principaux événemens du Règne de Frédéric-Guillaume II. Paris, 1800. 3 vols. 8vo. The autobiography of his sister, the Margravine of Bareuth (Paris, 1810. 2 vols. 8vo), affords many curious particulars of his youth, and of the domestic life of the king, their father. This is a translation from Thiebault's "Souvenirs de Berlin." Paris, 1804 and 1813. 5 vols. 8vo. The author was Professor of Belles Lettres in Frederic's Royal Academy of Berlin.

Secret History of the Court of Berlin: or, the Character of the present King of Prussia, his Ministers, Mistresses, Generals, Courtiers, Favourites, and the Royal Family of Prussia; with numerous Anecdotes of the Potentates of Europe, especially of the late Frederic II., and an Interesting Picture of the State of Politics, particularly in Prussia, Russia, Germany, and Holland, in a Series of Letters. This is the work of that extraordinary man, Honoré Gabriel, Count Mirabeau. He also wrote, in conjunction with Mauvillon, another work on Prussia, entitled "De la Monarchie Prússienne sous Frederic le Grand."

We need scarcely refer to Voltaire's excellent and agreeable History of Peter. There are some English lives of him; but none esteemed. Wheaton, Henry: History of the Northmen, or Danes and Normans, from the Earliest Times to the Conquest of England, by William of Normandy.

In English we have Malcolm's History of Russia, and Ouseley's epitome of the ancient history of the same. De Cerceau has given a Histoire des Révolutions de Perse depuis 1700: and Picault, a like one, pendant le 18e Siècle. The dissertation prefixed by Richardson to his Persian-Arabic-English Dictionary forms a learned and acute examination of the earlier Persian history.
