Malespini, Ricordano: Historia Antica dall'edificazione di Fiorenza, per insino all'anno 1281; con l'aggiunta di Giaccheto, per insino al 1286. Florence, 1826. 4to.

Roscoe, Wm.: Life of Lorenzo de Medici. Philadelphia, 1803. 2 vols. 8vo.

To complete this edition of this elegant and learned biography, it is necessary to have "İllustrations, Historical and Critical, of the Life of Lorenzo de Medici." London, 1822. 8vo. Tenhove's "Memoirs of the House of Medici," translated by Sir Richard Clayton (Bath, 1797, 2 vols. 4to), are important and curious.

: Life and Pontificate of Leo X. 8vo.

London, 1806. 6 vols.

These two, besides their importance as to civil history, form, together, an excellent body of the history of letters in Italy at the period of their revival. Of the Greek scholars, who were the more immediate agents of this introduction of learning, the best account is found in Hody's (or Hodius's) "De Græcis illustribus, Linguæ Græcæ Instauratoribus," London, 1742. Greswell's Life of Politian; Shepherd's Life of Poggio; and Duppa's Life of Michael Angelo, are also good adjuncts to Roscoe's books.

Sforzosi: Compendious History of Italy. Translated by Greene. (Harpers' Family Library.) New-York, 1837. 18mo. Sismondi, J. C. L.: History of the Italian Republics, being a View of the Rise, Progress, and Fall of Italian Freedom. Philadelphia, 1833. 12mo.

This is an abridgment of his own Histoire des Républiques Italiénnes du Moyen Age.

Venice, under the Yoke of France and Austria, with Memoirs of the Courts, Governments, and People of Italy, presenting a faithful Picture of her Present Condition. London, 1824. 3 vols. 8vo.

Venetian History. (Family Library.) New-York. 2 vols. 18mo.

To Italian history, the great collection of Muratori, Rerum Italicarum Scriptores, Milan, 1723, 28 vols. folio, is indispensable. It has been continued by the following: Ad Scriptores, &c., Accessiones Historica; Venice, 1771, folio: Tartinius, Rerum Ital. Scriptores; Florence, 1748, 2 vols. folio. Assemanus, Italicæ Histoiræ Scriptores. Rome, 1751. 4 vols. 4to. The Annali of Muratori are also important; and, as to Sicily, Grævius's Collection, Thesaurus Antiq. et Historiarum Italiæ. Leyden, 1723. 15 vols. folio. It embraces much curious history, as to the Saracenic and Norman domination in that island. Of the Italian Thucydides, Guicciardini, there are several English translations. Of Venice, the old history of Nani is still esteemed. Daru's Histoire de la République de Venise, Paris, 1810, 7 vols. 8vo, is of great merit. Saint-Réal's Conjuration des Espagnols contre Venise is well known, as rivalling Sallust himself in the brilliant conciseness of its style. Florence is rich in historians. The investigations of Micali relate largely to its original races, the Etrurians. Leonardo Aretini, Poggio, Giovani and Matteo Villani, Nerli, are, besides Macchiavelli and Guicciardini, writers of its annals. For Rome, see Lives of the Popes, &c., in Ecclesiastical History. For Naples, Giannone's History is esteemed, and has an English translation. Miss Berry's Life of Queen Joanna illustrates one of its more interesting periods. De Burigny has given a good Histoire Générale de Sicile. There is a History of the Revolutions of Genoa, by De Brequigny, in French. For Fiesco's Conspiracy, see De Retz's account, in his Memoirs, and Robertson, in his Charles V. Of the smaller Italian states, we have not space to give the historians. The larger work of Sismondi, mentioned above (16 vols. 8vo), is reduced, with much research, from their local histories, and is highly instructive and interesting.

The Spanish Chronicles are too numerous for mention. There are several lives of Cardinal Ximenes; among which is one in French, by Fléchier. The best of their historians is Mariana. As to the Moorish domination, the Spanish of Condé, Dominacion de los Arabes in España, is the main modern book. It has been abridged, by De Marles, in his Domination des Arabes en Espagne. There are, also, Marmol's Historia de los Moriscos de Grenada: Mendoza's Guerra de Granada; and the Historia de los Vendos de los Zagaris y Abencerrages, Cavalleros Moros de Granada, by Ginez Perez de Hita; one of the books spared by the curate, in the conflagration of Don Quixote's library.
