The Embassade de la Compagnie des Indes vers l'Empereur du Japon; Thunberg's Voyage au Japon; and Golovnin's Voyage chez les Japonois en 1811-13, are, with Titsingh's Illustrations of Japan (London, 1822, 4to), all that are worth mention.

CHAPTER XXX.

GEOGRAPHY. Africa. Travels in Several Parts.

Denham and Clapperton: Travels and Discoveries in Northern and Central Africa, in 1822-4. Boston, 1826. 8vo.

Murray, Hugh: Historical Account of Discoveries and Travels in Africa; by the late John Leyden, M.D., enlarged and completed to the Present Time, with Illustrations of its Geography and Natural History, as well as of the Moral and Social Condition of its Inhabitants. Owen: Voyages to Explore the Shores of Africa, Arabia, and Madagascar. 2 vols. 12mo.

There are two important Arabian writers: Abulfeda's Description of Africa, and Edrisi's. But they are untranslated, except the latter, into Latin. Shaw's travels concern only Egypt and Northern Africa; but contain a translation of the geography of Africa, as known to the ancients, from Ptolemy, Pliny, &c. Bruce belongs chiefly to Abyssinia and Park to Central Africa; but are indispensable to a collection. Of the former, the Edinburgh edition of Alexander Murray, 1805, 7 vols. 8vo, and plates 4to, is the best. See also, in Biography, Sparks's Life of Ledyard; of whose attempts an account is found in the Proceedings of the African Association, London, 1790, 4to. See further details in the next sections.

CHAPTER XXXI.

GEOGRAPHY. Africa. Travels in Egypt, Nubia, and Abyssinia.

Belzoni: Narrative of the Operations and Discoveries within the Pyramids, Temples, Tombs, &c., in Egypt and Nubia; with a Journey to the Coast of the Red Sea in search of the Ancient Berenice, and another to the Oasis of Jupiter Ammon. London, 1822. 2 vols. 8vo.

Nubia and Abyssinia. (Family Library.) New-York, 1835. 18mo.

Salt, Henry: Voyage to Abyssinia, and Travels in its Interior, in 1809, 10. Philadelphia, 1816. 8vo.

The same. London, 1814. 4to.

Savary: Letters on Egypt. London, 1799. 2 vols. 8vo. Sonnini: Travels in Upper and Lower Egypt. London, 1799. 3 vols. 8vo.

White: Ægyptiaca. Oxford, 1801. 4to.

There is a sequel.

Besides Belzoni and Denon's books (the latter in 2 vols. folio, in the French edition, with plates), the expedition of Bonaparte produced the magnificent literary result of the imperial publication, known as the Description de l'Egypte, Paris, 1709-18, 9 vols. folio, and Atlas-a work costing 3600 francs. Norden's old book is more expensive than useful. Volney's Travels in Syria and Egypt; Horneman's Travels; Leigh's Travels up the Nile; D'Anville's Mémoire sur l'Egypte; The Ægyptiaca of White and of Hamilton; Quatremere's Mémoires Géographiques et Historiques sur l'Egypte, are of admitted value. There are two good Arabian accounts, that of Abulfeda, published at Gottingen, 1776, in 8vo, Arabic and Latin, and the Compendium of Abdollatif, translated in the second part of White's Egyptiaca. De Sacy has given a French version. Of the Abyssinian regions, Ludulf, Lobo (translated by Dr. Johnson, whence his Rasselas), Tellez, Alvarez, Poncet, and Pearce formed, before Bruce, nearly all that was known.

This is said to be translated from a Spanish MS. found in the Isle of Palms. There is, by Bory Saint Vincent, an Essai sur les Isles Fortunées et l'Antique Atlantide. Paris, 1803. 4to; and Bailly's learned but fanciful Recherches, sur l'Atlantide.

Shaw has been already referred to; the edition, Oxford, 1738, 2 vols. folio, with copious illustrations in antiquities, natural history, &c. The old description of Leo Africanus (one of the earliest of modern travellers in Africa) is often cited. There is a pretty little Elzevir Edition, Latiné. The Voyages of Fathers Cromelin and Philemon (French); of Poiret; of Brooks; of Lempriere, and of M'Carthy; Chenier's History of Morocco; Laugier de Tassy's Histoire Générale du royaume d'Alger; Rehbinder's Nachrichten und Bemerkungen ueber den Algierschen Staat; and Pananti's Aventure ed Osservazione sopra la costa di Barbaria, are worthy of note; and, for the period since the French occupation of Algiers, Rozet's Voyage dans la Régence d'Algers.
