CHAPTER CXLIV.

PROSE FICTIONS.

I. Introduction. History and Collections.

Scott, Sir Walter: Lives of the Novelists. Works, vol. 3, Polygraphs.

Place, M. de la: Collection de Romans et contes; traduits de

l'Anglois, corrigés et nevus de nouveau. Paris, 1788. 6 tomes 8vo.

In English, the agreeable work of Dunlop, his History of Fiction, London, 1814, 3 vols sm. 8vo, may be said to be the only account we have of this branch of literature. Ballantyne's Collection of Romances embraces only some twelve or fifteen authors, those of whom the lives are written by Sir Walter Scott. Mrs. Inchbald's collection takes but a slight range. Some of the more curious pieces of Italian, German, and Spanish popular romances have been collected into English by Roscoe, in his Novelists. Warton's History of English Poetry contains much upon the earlier fictions of our language.

In French, we may cite the elegant little history of romance by Huet, his Origine des Romans, Paris, 1711, 12mo, and the esteemed disquisition of Fauchet, his Recueil de l'origine de la Langue Française, rhyme et Romans, in his works. Paris, 1610. 4to. Lenglet du Fresnoy has given a somewhat similar book, under title De l'usage des Romans. There are two large French collections, the Bibliotheque Universelle des Romans, 112 vols, 12mo, and the Nouvelle Bibliothèque des Romans, 56 vols. 12mo.

II. Ancient Greek Romances.

Achilles Tatii, de Clitophontis et Leucippes amoribus; cum varietate lectionis notisque, Cl. Salmasii, J. B. Carpzovii, T. B. Bergeri, et B. G. L. Boden. Græcé, with interleaved MS. translation in English. Lipsiæ, 1776. 2 vols. sm. 8vo. ΗΛΙΟΔΩΡΟΥ ΑΙΘΙΟΠΙΚΩΝ, ΒΙΒΛΙΑΔΕΚΑ, cum Animadversionibus, Joannis Bourdelotii: recensuit Schmidius. Græcé. Leipsic, 1772. 8vo.

Niceta Eugeniani Narratio Amatoria: Constantini Manassis Fragmenta. Græcé, edidit Jo. Fr. Boissonade. Leyden, 1819. 2 in 1 vol. 16mo.

1569.

The above are but a part of that curious series, the Ionian Romances-the earliest efforts of fictitious prose narrative; unless, indeed, we assign Xenophon's Cyropædia to a class which it so closely approaches. The other Greek novelists are Lucian (his Ass, &c.), Parthenius, Conon, Athenagoras, Longus (in

whom Courier has restored the hiatus), Xenophon Ephesius, Theodorus Prodromus, Eustathius, and Chariton Aphrodisiensis. The most valued of the series are Heliodorus and Longus. These, with Achilles, Tatius, and Xenophon of Ephesus, are given in an esteemed collection, Scriptores Eratici Græce, from the press of Deux Ponts, 1792, 3 parts in 4 vols. 8vo. The entire series is translated into Italian by Annibal Caro and others, and into French, under title of Bibliotheque des Romans Grecs. Paris, 1797. 12 vols. 18mo.

In Latin, there is a like series, formed by Apuleius (Golden Ass), Petronius, and, we may say, Philostratus's Life of Apollonius of Tyana. The two former, as well as the surviving Greek writers, are supposed to have written upon the model of those Milisian tales, of which Aristides was the most celebrated composer. See, also, among Fables, the Gesta Romanorum; which are a body of monkish tales, the forerunners of the romances of chivalry; Amadis, Launcelot du lac, Merlin, Arthur, &c.
