These two articles are, of course, both voyages and life, abridgments. Dampier New Voyage round the World.

8vo.

London, 1699. 2 vols.

This is Gulliver's "Cousin," as he more amusingly, than justly, styles him : for his story is regarded as not less veracious than remarkable. He was, in truth, a member of the society of bucaniers-a genuine successor to Drake and Raleigh, and with much of their heroic spirit, though somewhat more piratical still in his practices. His voyages are also given in Churchill's Collection.

Seeing everything in the colours of the imagination only, and far more solicitous to be eloquent than instructive, no traveller, except his imitator, Lamartine, is less to be depended on. See his Recollections"-Travels in Europe and

America.

Clarke, E. D.: Travels in various Parts of Europe, Asia, and Africa. New-York, 1815. 12mo.

Incomplete. The best edition is that of Cambridge (where he was professor of mineralogy), 1810-23. 6 vols. 4to., with plates. It is, perhaps (except Pallas, and Humboldt, aud John Bell), the best and soundest book of travels since the days of Tournefort, when wise and learned men went travelling, and coxcombs stayed at home.

Ulloa, Juan de Adventures in a Voyage to Calcutta, soon after the Discovery of India, by Vasco de Gama. New-York, 1826.

Books, even for children, should not carry gross mistakes on their fronts. Vasco de Gama did not discover India, but merely the passage there around the Cape of Good Hope. The affair is fictitious and juvenile.
