SONNET. P. M.

101

When for eternal worlds we steer, And seas are calm, and skies are clear, And faith in lively exercise, And distant hills of Canaan rise,

The soul for joy then claps her wings, And loud her lovely sonnet sings,

[Vain world adieu,

Vain world adieu, And loud her lovely sonnet sings, Vain world

[adieu.

141 "When for eternal worlds."

2 With cheerful hope her eyes explore
Each landmark on the distant shore;
The trees of life, the pastures green,
The golden streets, the crystal stream;
Again for joy she claps her wings,
And loud her lovely sonnet sings,
Vain world adieu.

3 The nearer still she draws to land,
More eager all her powers expand;
With steady helm, and free-bent sail,
Her anchor drops within the vail;
Again for joy she claps her wings,
And loud her celestial sonnet sings,
Glory to God.

PLEYEL'S HYMN. 7s.

PLEXEL.

1. Hasten, sinner, to be wise! Stay not for the morrow's sun; 2. Hasten, mercy to implore! Stay not for the morrow's sun:

Wisdom if you still despise, Harder is it to be won.
Lest thy season should be o'er, Ere this evening's stage be run.

142 The danger of delay.

3 Hasten, sinner, to return!

Stay not for the morrow's sun,
Lest thy lamp should fail to burn
Ere salvation's work is done.

4 Hasten, sinner, to be blest!

Stay not for the morrow's sun,
Lest perdition thee arrest
Ere the morrow is begun.

143 Tribute of praise at parting.

1 CHRISTIANS, brethren, ere we part,
Every voice and every heart

Join, and to our Father raise
One last hymn of grateful praise.

2 Though we here should meet no more,
Yet there is a brighter shore;

There, released from toil and pain,
There we all may meet again.

144 Prayer for God's presence.

1 SAVIOUR, at thy feet we bow,
vouchsafe to meet us now;

[ocr errors]

At thy people's earnest cry,
Bring thy loving mercy nigh.

2 Thou hast said, where two or three
In thy worship shall agree,
That thou wilt be present there,
Answering their faithful prayer.

HEAVENLY KING.

103

1. Children of the heavenly King, As we journey let us sing;

Sing our Saviour's worthy praise, Glorious in his works and ways.

2. We are trav'ling home to God, In the way our fathers trod;

They are happy now, and we Soon their happiness shall see.

145 The pilgrim's song.

3 Fear not, brethren, joyful stand
On the borders of our land;
Jesus Christ, our Father's Son,
Bids us undismayed go on.
4 Lord! obediently we 'll go,
Gladly leaving all below:
Only thou our leader be,
And we still will follow thee.

WOODLAND. C. M.

GOULD.

There is an hour of peaceful rest, To mourning wand'rers

given; There is a joy for souls dis-tressed, A

ry wounded breast, 'T is found above in heaven.

146 The land of rest.

2 There is a home for weary souls,
By sin and sorrow driven,

When toss'd on life's tempestuous shoals,
Where storms arise, and ocean rolls,
And all is drear but heaven.

3 There faith lifts up the tearless eye,
To brighter prospects given;
And views the tempest passing by,
The evening shadows quickly fly,
And all serene in heaven.

4 There fragrant flowers immortal bloom,
And joys supreme are given ;
There rays divine disperse the gloom;
Beyond the confines of the tomb

Appears the dawn of heaven.

FREDERICK. 11s.

105

GEO. KINGSLEY.

I would not live alway: I ask not to stay Where storm after

storm rises dark o'er the way; The few lurid mornings that

dawn on us here, Are enough for life's woes, full enough for its cheer.

147 I would not live alway.

2 I would not live alway; no-welcome the tomb!
Since Jesus hath lain there, I dread not its gloom
There sweet be my rest till he bid me arise,
To hail him in triumph descending the skies.
3 Who, who would live alway, away from his God-
Away from yon heaven, that blissful abode,
Where rivers of pleasure flow bright o'er the plains,
And the noontide of glory eternally reigns?

4 There saints of all ages in harmony meet,
Their Saviour and brethren transported to greet;
While anthems of rapture unceasingly roll,
And the smile of the Lord is the feast of the soul.

148 Doxology.

O FATHER Almighty, to thee be addressed,
With Christ and the Spirit, one God, ever blest,
All glory and worship, from earth and from heaven,
As was, and is now, and shall ever be given.
