THE Second

PREFACE.

'Standard' Reading and Home Lesson Book has been prepared to meet a want which teachers of large schools have long felt-that of a book written in the children's own language, containing short, varied, and easy lessons bearing upon their school and home life, with a thoroughly systematic course of home lessons; all carefully adapted to meet the requirements of the 'Revised Code' for Standard II.

Most of the prose lessons are original, and have been written by experienced teachers for this work. The object of the narratives is to lead the children to habits of truthful speaking, kindliness, cleanliness, and industry.

We have appointed three Home Lessons for each night, but if the teacher should find this too much for the children to learn thoroughly, he might allow them to take the same lessons for a second, or even a third time.

Towards the close of the book a few easy questions in multiplication have been inserted, intended to be introductory to Standard III., and to serve as an exercise upon the Multiplication Table. J. G. T. S. B.

REQUIREMENTS.

READING:-( -One of the narratives next in order after monosyllables in an elementary reading book used in the school. WRITING :-Copy in manuscript character a line of print. ARITHMETIC:-A sum in simple addition, and the Multiplication Table.

THE

SECOND 'STANDARD' READING AND

HOME LESSON BOOK.

A GOOD BOY.

loves, school, scold, noise, with-out, should, draw, sums, learn, neat.

A good boy loves to go to school and learn as much as he can. He does not play by the way, or stand to stare at things in the streets, or in the shops. He is always at the school in time, so that his teacher has never to keep him for being too late. He takes his place without making a noise, and begins his work with a right good will.

He does not look off his book, or begin to draw houses, men, and dogs upon his slate, when he should be doing his sums. How quick he is to learn, and how soon he gets to the top of his class!

When he gets to be a big boy, you will find him in the first class of the school, and able to work hard sums, read well, and write a neat hand.

HOME LESSONS.-I. Learn to repeat 'three times' for Multiplication. II. Work the first two of the following sums.
