Chap. XXVI ments, rightly used, is not conferred by any power in them; neither doth the efficacy of a facrament depend upon the piety or intention of him that doth administer it & but upon the work of the Spirit h, and the word of inftitution; which contains, together with a precept authorifing the ufe thereof, a promife of benefit to worthy receivers i.

IV. There be only two facraments ordained by Christ our Lord in the gofpel, that is to fay, Baptifm and the Supper of the Lord: neither of which may be difpenfed by any, but by a minifter of the word, lawfully ordained k..

V. The facraments of the Old Teftament, in regard of the fpiritual things thereby fignified and exhibited, were, for fubftance, the fame with thofe of the New 1.

III. g Rom. ii. 28. For he is not a Jew, which is one outwardly; neither is that circumcifion, which is outward in the flesh: v. 29. But he is a Jew, which is one inwardly; and circumcifion is that of the heart, in the spirit, and not in the letter, whofe praife is not of men, but of God. Pet. iii. 21. The like fi gure whereunto, even baptifm, doth alfo now fave us, (not the putting away of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience towards God) by the refurrection of Jefus Chrift.

IV. k Matth. xxviii. 19. Go ye therefore and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost. 1 Cor. xi. 20. When ye come together therefore into one place, this is not to eat the Lord's fupper. v. 23. For I have received of the Lord, that which alfo I delivered unto you, That the Lord Jefus, the fame night in which he was betrayed, took bread. 1 Cor. iv. 1. Let a man fo account of us, as of the minifters of Chrift, and ftewards of the myfteries of God. Heb. v. 4. And no man taketh this honour unto himfelf, but he that is called of God, as was Aaron.

V. I Cor. x. 1. Moreover, brethren, I would not that ye fhould be ignorant, how that all our fathers were under the cloud, and all paffed through the fea; v. 2. And were all baptized into Mofes in the cloud and in the fea; v. 3. And did all eat the fame fpiritual meat ;

CHAP. XXVIII. Of Baptifm.

Aptifm is a facrament of the New Teftament, ordained by Jefus Chrift a, not only for the folemn admiffion of the party baptized into the vifible church b, but allo-to be unto him a fign and feal of the covenant of grace c, of his ingrafting into Chrift d, of regeneration e, of remiffion of fins f, and of his giving up unto God through Jefus Chrift, to walk in newnefs of life g: Which facrament is, by Christ's own appointment, to be continued in his church until the end of the world h.

II. The outward element to be used in this facrament is water, wherewith the party is to be baptized in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Gholt

v. 4. And did all drink the fame fpiritual drink: (for they drank of that fpiritual Rock that followed them: and that Rock was Chrift.)

IV. Not only those that do actually profefs faith in and obedience unto Chrift, but also the infants of one or both believing parents are to be baptized m.

III. k Heb. ix. 10. 19. 20. 21. 22. Acts ii. 41. Then they that gladly received his word, were baptized, and the fame day there were added unto them about three thoufand fouls. Acts xvi. 33. And he took them the fame hour of the night, and washed their ftripes; and was baptized, he and all his, ftraightway. Mark vii. 4. And when they come from the market, except they wash, they eat not. And many other things there be, which they have received to hold, as the washing of cups and pots, brazen veffels, and of tables.

And I will eftablifh my covenant between me and thee, and thy feed after thee, in their generations, for an everlasting covenant; to be a God unto thee, and to thy feed after thee. v. 9. So then they which be of faith, are bleffed with faithful Abraham. v. 14. V. Altho' it be a great fin to contemn or neglect this ordinance n, yet grace and falvation are not fo infeparably annexed unto it, as that no perfon can be regenerated or faved without it o, or that all that are baptized are undoubtedly regenerated p.

VI. The efficacy of baptism is not tied to that moment of time wherein it is administered q; yet notwithstanding, by the right use of this ordinance, the grace pro

off, even as many as the Lord our God fhall call. And Rom. iv. II. And the father of circumcifion to them, who are not of the circumcifion only, but also walk in the fteps of that faith of our father Abraham, which he had being yet uncircumcifed. I Cor. vii. 14. For the unbelieving husband is fanctified by the wife, and the unbelieving wife is fanctified by the husband; elfe were your children unclean; but now are they holy. Matth. xxviii. 19. And they brought young children to him, that he fhould touch them; and his difciples rebuked thofe that brought them. v. 14. V. n Luke vii. 30. But the Pharifees and lawyers rejected the counfel of God against themselves, being not baptized of him. With Exod. iv. 24. And it came to pass by the way in the inn, that the Lord met him, and fought to kill him. v, 25. Then Zipporah took a fharp ftone, and cut off the forefkin of her fon, and caft it at his feet, and faid, Surely a bloody husband art thou to me. v. 26. So he let him go: then fhe faid, A bloody husband thou art, because of the circumcifion.

UR Lord Jefus, in the night wherein he was betrayed,

instituted the facrament of his body and blood. called the Lord's Supper, to be obferved in his church unto the end of the world, for the perpetual remembrance of the facrifice of himself in his death, the fealing all benefits thereof unto true believers, their fpiritual nourishment and growth in him, their farther engagement in and to all duties which they owe unto him, and to be a bond and pledge of their communion with him, and with each other, as members of his mystical body a.

Gal. iii. 27. For as many of, you as have been baptized into Chrift, have put on Chrift. Tit. iii. 5.
