Waltham Abbey, 1 m. distant, derives its name from an Abbey of very ancient origin, which was enlarged by Harold, who was buried within its precincts. All that now remains of the building is a part of the west end 1844 of the Ladye Chapel, now used as the parochial 181 church. An ancient gate at some distance, partly built with Roman bricks, marks one of the entrances of the Abbey garden. Pop. of town 1851, 2329, and of parish, 4303. Nazeing.
