Naples, April 15. Mount Vefuvius broke, on Thursday laft, with great violence, on the oppofite fide to its firft eruption; and a new lava took its courfe towards the Torre del Annunciata, between Portici and Pompeia. The lava is really tremendous, the river of fire being now at least four miles in length, and in fome places near two miles in breadth. It has already deftroyed three vineyards, and is continuing its courfe flowly, over cultivated lands, towards the village of Annunciata. The lava, at its fource, and for the first mile, is as rapid as the river Severn at the paffage near Briftol; but, by extending itself, cools, and lofes its velocity, fo as not to advance more than thirty feet in an hour.

The young Stadtholder of Holland, who lately came of age, has, during the courfe of the prefent month, vifited most of the departments under his jurifdiction, and has made fuch promotions and alterations in each, as he faw neceffary. He has been received in all the cities through which he paffed, by the acclamations of the people and the strongest marks of fincere affection.

The merchants, traders, freeholders, and citizens of Dublin, have prefented the following addrefs to their representatives in parliament:

"Gentlemen,

"Having authentic intelligence, that the bill, upon which the Proteftant intereft and freedom of this kingdom greatly depend, is dropped in Great Britain; and finding that every attempt made by the commons of Ireland, ftrengthened by the united and general voice of all ranks and denominations of Proteftants, to obtain a law for limiting the duration of parliaments, has hitherto proved ineffectual; we cannot but think that the commons of this kingdom will fland juftified in following the example given them by the commons of England, on a fimilar occafion, at the late glorious revolution, that grand æra of British liberty. We therefore, as citizens and freeholders of this metropolis, thinking ourfelves bound to ftand foremost in all national

national measures, have taken the earliest opportunity to declare our fentiments upon this moft interefting event, and to entreat that you will never give your affent to any money-bill of longer duration than three months, till a law paffes in this kingdom, for a feptennial limitation of parliament."

General Elliot's and General Burgoyne's regiments of light-horfe, were reviewed on Monday by his Majesty, and made a fine appearance. They are for the future to be called the King's and Queen's regiments of dragoons, and their uniforms are to be al-. tered.

One day last week, Mrs. Bradford, a gentlewoman of Walling ford in Berkshire, was found, to appearance, dead, in a field near that town, and put into a coffin, where the remained three days, when, to the furprize of her acquaintance, the revived juft as the coffin was going to be screwed up, and is now in perfect health.

The parliament of Paris are engaged in a fresh broil with the Archbishop of Paris, on account of a new formula, which the latter requires to be figned by all perfons applying for ordination.

A child, the daughter of Mr. Holland, of St. George's Fields, Southwark, fell into a pond, from which he was taken out, near an hour afterwards, quite stiff, and to all appearance dead; but by rubbing her well with fait, and rolling her in it, fhe recovered in about

four hours, fo as to be able to speak, and is likely to do well.

By a fire which happened at Upfal, in Sweden, on the 30th of the laft month, ten ftone houses, eightyfeven wooden ones, and feveral barns were confumed.

Madrid, April 25. The king has fent orders to the Marquis d'Enfenada to retire from court. Yefterday two regiments of horse arrived here with eight pieces of cannon; and near 10,000 troops are posted round this capital, to affift in cafe of future disturbances, which are much to be feared from the prefent apparent difcontent of the people.

Extract of a letter from Dunkirk, May 10.

"The minute Mrs. Ogilvie arrived at this place; fhe fet out in a pott-chaife for Bergues, a town two leagues from hence, and there employed the mistress of the Auberge to buy her a cap, a handkerchief, and feveral little articles necellary to the apparel of a wo, man."

Paris, May 16. An ordinance of . the Duke de Choifeul, as fuperintendant-general of the polls, is juft publifhed, which prohibits the poftmalters of Paris, and twelve leagues round, furnishing horfes to any perfon without an order from his Majefty, or a permiffion from the fuperintendant; the contrary cuftom having been found to facilitate the efcape of bankrupts and criminals, who by that means evaded the purfuit of juftice. The poftmafters of the frontier. towns are likewife directed, not to grant horfes to perfons coming [H] 2

from foreign countries, without permiffion of the governors of those

towns.

An arret of the council of ftate, dated April 21, is alfo juft publifhed; by which his Majefty directs, that no merchants, traders, financiers, burghers, or other perfons who have ftopt payment, been bankrupts, or have made a compofition with their creditors, fhall be again admitted upon the exchange to tranfact any bufinefs or traffic whatsoever.

An earthen urn was lately dug up at Tofcanella, not far from Rome, which contained a great number of gold coins, and 100 filver coins with the impreffions of Pope Eugenius IV.

Several more paintings, and a marble ftatue, have been difcovered in the ruins of the ancient city of Pompeia. The paintings reprefent galleys with feveral oars; and the ftatue exhibits a woman in the Egyptian drefs, crowned with gilded flowers. On the pedeftal is the following infcription.-L. CECILIUS PHOEBUS. POSUIT I. D. D. D. There have likewife been found, befides this ftatue, feveral remains of curious fculpture.

Baron Law de Laurifton, commandant general of the French fettlements in the Indies, has concluded a private convention with Lord Clive; by which it is agreed, that there may be in the port of Chandernagor five French officers, fome European foldiers, and 100 Seapoys; and much the fame regulations are ftipulated for Patna, Coffimbuzar, and other forts.

Great rejoicing's have been made in all the cyder-counties for the

repeal of the cyder act, by which now, three forts of perfons only are the objects of that act, viz. the factor, or agent, who receives and fells cyder, &c. by commiffion; the dealer or jobber, who buys cyder to fell again wholefale; and the publican, who retails it.

A fmall island, called BridgeMarsh, within nine miles of Malden in Effex, which was overflowed by the fea upwards of thirty years fince, is now draining, piling, and inclofing, the fea being withdrawn from the fame. It is upwards of a mile and an half in length, and nearly half that in breadth. It appears at present very green, with a tall, ftrong, grafs.

The unfortunate town of Crediton, in Devonshire, which lately, about eleven o'clock in the fore

noon, had fixty dwelling-houses reduced to afhes by fire, fuffered a great lofs by fire in the year 1753, when upwards of four hundred and fixty houfes were burnt down, befides the market-house, wool-chambers, and other public buildings, to the damage of 53,000l. and upwards.

The hereditary Prince of Brunf wick arrived at Verfailles the zzd ult. and was prefented the fame day to his Moft Chriflian Majefty and the royal family.

The Marquis of Granby has adjudged two new medals in gold, and two in filver, to four of the gentlemen cadets, as prizes of honour at the royal military academy at Woolwich, with the following names infcribed on the edge of each medal, viz. gold medals: Thomas Hyde Page, 5 June, MDCCLXV, and John Cridland,

medals: Charles were publicly baptized at the common horfe-pond near Evesham turnpike, in prefence of above 1500 fpectators.

Green, 5 June, MDCCLXV. and Thomas Nepeau, ditto. On the face of the medal is the King's head in profile, laureated: legend is AUSPICIIS GEORG. III. OPT. PRINC. P. P. On the reverse is the figure of Minerva, with her proper attributes; legend is, PRÆMIA LAUDI. In the exergue is, D. M. GRANBY MAG. GEN. ORD. MDCCLXV.

A medal has been ftruck at Vienna, on occafion of the marriage of the Archduchefs Maria Chriftiana, to Prince Albert of Saxony; on one fide of which are reprefented the buits of their Royal Highneffes, with this infcription: M. CHRISTINA AUSTRICA. ALBERTUS SAXONICUS. On the other fide appear two palm-trees, whole branches twine together, with Hymen in the middle, who unites the Auftrian arms to one tree, and the Saxon arms to the other. The words are as follows, Quo VOTA TRAHUNT; and on the exergue CONJUNCTI D. IX. Apr. MDCCLXVI.

The French had erected obelifks and croffes on different parts of the African coaft, which the commanders of our men of war on that ftation, confidering as tokens of poffeffion, have removed, as was last year done at Turk's inland.

The bank of Venice has given notice, that the intereft of their funds will be reduced to 4 per cent. and that those who do not chufe to accept of these terms, will be paid their principal.

The Sieur Comus, during his ftay here, has by his dexterity acquired no less than 5000 l. most of which he will carry off with him.

They write from Guifbrough, in Yorkshire, that last week was dug in the garden of William Cha.. loner, Efq; 143 young potatoes, the produce of one root; and what is remarkable, no top had sprung from it.

Tuesday night a foldier's wife, who lodges in Tottenham-court road, was delivered of a boy and girl, and yesterday morning of another boy; the girl died foon after its birth, but the two boys are likely to live.

The lady of Sir William Nicholfon (of Glenbervy) Bart. was lately delivered of a daughter. William is 92 years of age, has a daughter alive of his first marriage aged 66 years, married his prefent lady when he was 82 years old, and has had by her now fix children.

A few days ago a poor labourer's wife, at Burrowden in Rutlandfhire, was fafely delivered of three boys and a girl. The woman is likely to do well, but the children are dead.

Died at a village near Raynham in Norfolk, one John Bowell, a ploughman, in the 105th year of his age, who had followed that occupation upwards of 88 years, and continued it to within four months of his death.

The haymakers affembled at the Royal Exchange, to the number of 440 perfons, when a collection was made for them on account of the heavy rains, which prevented their getting work.

A very extraordinary fraud was lately practifed on two Bristol merchants, Devonshire and Reeve, who having received a letter from London, as from Barclay and Sons, advifing them of the death of Godfrey Stafford, Efq. by which his nephew, who was in their city in very neceffitous circumftances, became poffeffed of a confiderable fortune, and defiring them at the fame time, to remove him from his obfcurity, and fupply him with whatever fhould be neceffary, for which the letter writer would be accountable: Thefe gentlemen, in confequence of this letter, made inquiry, and found out this pretended nephew, exactly in the circumftances defcribed; fupplied him with money to purchase proper neceffaries, and by the advices fo well authenticated, advanced his
