My object in writing a few prefatory words is to draw special attention to the last but one Appendix, which contains an important essay, specially written for this work, by Rao Bahadur M. G. Ranade, whom I am proud to number among my most valued friends. It is the result of a considerable amount of study, research, and thought; and I trust it will be the means of turning orthodox public opinion against infant marriage. I am responsible for all that is not acknowledged to be others' in this book. I am sorry, I have had, in the Symposium, to put in the mouths of Sir T. Madava Row and two or three others some words which are not theirs, but which, I hope, are in accord with their views. I owe these gentlemen an apology, and I trust they will accept it.
