LONDON: PRINTED FOR G. AND W. B. WHITTAKER, 13, AVE-MARIA LANE LUDGATE STREET. ADVERTISEMENT. DR. GOLDSMITH's celebrated Histories of England, Greece, and Rome, have long since obtained an unrivalled station in the best Schools; but, notwithstanding their historical merit, in this age of refinement some objections have been raised to certain passages, which appear to be written more for the use of those of maturer years, than for the formation and improvement of the youthful mind; and many Teachers, sensibly alive to the true interests of those committed to their charge, have lamented the necessity of adopting the works of other historians, which were pruned of these exuberances, although they were infinitely less instructive as historical compositions. With the view, therefore, of remedying the defect so justly complained of, and at the same time being desirous of rendering every service in their power to the cause of Education, the Publishers have had each Work thoroughly revised, and edited on their explanatory and interrogative system. Independent of this decided superiority over the common editions, they possess many other important advantages, and, it is trusted, are produced in a manner eminently calculated to give universal satisfaction;-all vulgarities of style being carefully corrected, every improper allusion sedulously obliterated, and the most valuable and interesting matter added, consisting of Introductory Chapters, descriptive of the manners and customs of the People, and numerous Classical, Mythological, Biographical, and Geographical Notes. |
