any reader shall have faith strengthened, or comfort supplied, through the manifestation of the Son of God in these selections from his Holy Word, the Compiler will have a rich rewardover and above what has come to his own heart while making them for use in his pastoral work.

It may be well to add that, while the "natural order of Scripture" has been freely disregarded, and passages-even parts of sentences have been brought together from remote places in the Bible, it is yet believed that "the mind of the Spirit" has been studiously regarded, and that an essential and vindicating unity will be recognized as running through them, fitly compacting what every joint supplieth toward a steadily progressive unfolding of the Great Theme.

SCRIPTURES FOR CHRISTMAS.

PRELUDE.

Comfort ye, comfort ye my people, saith your God. O Zion, that bringest good tidings, get thee up into the high mountain; O Jerusalem, that bringest good tidings, lift up thy voice with strength; lift it up, be not afraid; say unto the cities of Judah, Behold your God!

The voice of him that crieth in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make straight in the desert a highway for our God. Behold, his reward is with him, and his work before him. Say ye to the daughter of Zion, Behold, thy salvation cometh; and the glory of the Lord shall be revealed, and all flesh shall see it together.

Let the heavens be glad, and let the earth rejoice: let the sea roar, and the fulness thereof: let the floods clap their hands: let the hills be joyful together: let the trees of the wood sing out at the presence of the Lord, because
