for a day, for the purpose of being ridden ten or twelve miles (the distance not being further or otherwise ascertained) into the country to return in the evening, on the ground that this was a hiring for recreation or pleasure, and not for the purposes of travelling.* It was held under 48 Geo. 3. c. 98, &c. that if a person licensed in respect of a coach as a stage, let it with horses for hire, to a particular person, to take him on a journey short of the stage, and back again, he was liable to the duties upon post horses.t A person who agreed with the proprietor of a newspaper to convey several numbers from one place to another every Friday, at so much per week, and who either carried them himself or sent his boy with them, sometimes on horseback, and sometimes in a one-horse chaise, was not (under 44 Geo. 3. c. 98) liable to the post horse duties in respect of such conveyance, for it was not a letting of a horse for the purposes of travelling. It was held, that a composition for saddle horses under 59 Geo. 3. c. 51. did not protect the owner of such horses against the duties imposed by 1 Gev. 4. c. 88. s. 3. on horses let to hire, in case such horses were so let for the purposes of travelling.§ * Ramsden v.
