1st Session.

Treas. Dept.

EXPENDITURE-TREASURY DEPARTMENT, 1829.

APRIL 6, 1830.

Read, and laid upon the table.

Mr. LEIPER, from the Committee on Expenditures in the Treasury Department, made the following

REPORT:

The Committee on the Expenditures of the Treasury Department have instructed me to report that they have examined the vouchers of all moneys paid out of the contingent fund of that Department, and find them correct. Accompanying this report is a letter from the Secretary of the Treasury, marked 1, with the detailed account; and another from the Register, marked 2, with a general account current of the contingent expenses for the year

1829.

No. 1.

TREASURY DEPARTMENT, Feb. 22, 1830.

SIR: On receiving your letter of the 22d ult. I gave directions to the Register for preparing an abstract of the contingent and incidental expenditures of the Treasury Department for the year 1829. It has just been completed; and I have now the honor of transmitting it to you. It shows each expenditure, the person to whom payment was made, the object of each expenditure, the office for which it was made, and the amount. The number of each voucher is given in the margin, so that the committee may, with facility, refer to the particulars of any disbursement which they may wish to examine.

If the committee desire to inspect the vouchers, a clerk will be directed to attend them at the committee room; or a room at the Treasury is at their service if it be equally agreeable to the committee to make the examination here. As the vouchers are numerous, and their preservation is important, it is thought proper to retain them until the pleasure of the committee in this particular is known.

The abstract exhibits an expenditure during the year 1829 of $33,485 38. The amount appropriated for the year 1829 was $38,800, viz: $7,537 50, by the general appropriation act of 6th January, 1829, and $31,262 50, by the general appropriation act of 2d March, 1829, as will be seen at pages 6 and 26 of the acts of the last session.

I have the honor to be your obedient servant,

The Honorable GEORGE G. LEIPER,

S. D. INGHAM. Secretary of the Treasury.

Chairman of the Com. on the Expend. in Treas. Dept.

No. 2.

TREASURY DEpartment,

REGISTER'S OFFICE, March 9, 1830.

SIR: I have the honor to refer you to the enclosed account current, pre pared agreeably to the request of the committee.

The abstract of payments having been signed by me as Acting Register, it occurred to me that it would meet your approbation, that this account, as it is probably intended to accompany the abstract in the report to the House, be also certified by me in the same capacity.

I have the honor to be, Sir,

Your obedient servant,

Honorable GEORGE G. LEIPER.

MICHAEL NOURSE.
