LAMBS IN THE LION'S DEN.

A HAPPY New Year to you, dear children. Children love New Year's Day. I think they love everything new, new toys, new books, new friends; and God, who is so good,

has provided many of these pleasures for them; every day there is something new to learn, to observe, or to enjoy. There is, however, one danger in this love of new things, it may make us tire too soon of the old ones. Perhaps last January, some little girl or boy thought how delightful it was to begin to give, or to collect, pence every month for the poor little Irish children, who longed to learn about Jesus, but they have done it now for twelve months, and they are beginning to get tired of it. Let us go to the window this New Year's morning; the trees will teach us a lesson. Do you see those little swellings at the end of every twig, those are the buds; they contain the fresh new leaves of next spring; the trees are not tired of their old work, though they have gone on at it so long; so next spring their beauty will be new and fresh as ever. "Oh!" you will say, "it would be a sad thing if the
